This makes me so mad. I’m fortunate to have a full time job after having to move interstate to the middle of nowhere.
Prior to that I was unemployed and underemployed for nearly 4 years after graduating from uni and being admitted as a lawyer. I couldn’t find a job in my field and I was too ‘overqualified’ to get a job in retail or hospitality so I had no choice but to apply for Centrelink payments.
It was awful being unemployed, applying for hundreds of jobs in any area and being constantly knocked back. I felt like a complete failure, a disappointment and burden to my family and like I’d wasted my life studying so hard for years. I would look around and see friends and acquaintances with jobs who were buying houses, and travelling and it just made me feel worse. It took a toll on my mental health that it is still recovering from.
I can only imagine the despair and the greater pit of depression that I would be in by not receiving Centrelink payments for the first 6 months of unemployment. I feel so sorry for the people who will be forced to experience this thanks to the heartlessness of the current government.
This policy places a huge burden on the families of unemployed people to support them. Many of these families are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and will struggle all the more supporting their adult children. Without Centrelink payments, how are the unemployed going to have the funds to move elsewhere for work, which is the ‘simple solution’ put forward by Abbott for unemployed Tasmanians.
It’s unbelievable how out of touch Abbott and the LNP are with the people they govern and the realities of life for us mere plebs.
